Why most strategy games flop on mobile

Why most strategy games flop on mobile

June 5, 2026 · Lukas Brandt

Strategy is my favorite genre, and it's also the one that suffers most on phones. Ported PC interfaces with tiny buttons are a nightmare, and I've deleted plenty out of pure frustration.

The good ones rethink the controls from scratch. Tideborn Command is a recent example that actually understands a thumb isn't a mouse. Selection is generous, and you're never fighting the camera.

When a team designs for touch first, the whole experience opens up. You stop thinking about the interface and start thinking about tactics, which is the whole point.

My advice: try the tutorial before you judge a mobile strategy game. If you're mis-tapping units in the first five minutes, it's not going to get better.
