Are pixel RPGs still worth downloading?

Pixel art RPGs are everywhere on mobile now, and honestly most of them coast on nostalgia alone. Pretty sprites, hollow gameplay.

But then something like Emberfall Legends comes along and reminds me why I love the format. The writing carries it, the combat is tight, and the whole thing respects my time by making grinding optional.

What separates the good ones is intent. Are the pixels a shortcut, or a deliberate style choice backed by real design? You can usually tell within the first hour.

So yes, they're still worth it, but be picky. For every gem there are ten shovelware clones with the same three enemy types.
